The Prodigal – Nicky Black

The Prodigal – Nicky Black, Createspace, July 2015

The worst thing about dropping my Kindle in the bath was that I was a third of the way into this book and didn’t want to stop. The best thing about getting a new Kindle was picking up right where I’d left off.
As other commentators have noted, The Prodigal is full of grit, but it has so much more than that: an elegant yet informal style that carries you through without you even noticing it; a host of characters with virtues and flaws that embed them so firmly in the real world that even the best are no angels, and even the worst have something to redeem them – characters who remain engaging throughout; and best of all a tension, a real fear for those characters, encapsulated by a plot that manages the rare feat of being both plausible and thrilling at the same time.
A cracking novel, a brilliant read, a real talent.
