“This time everyone else had their ducks lined up and every last duck had “Alex Konninger” written in bold marker-pen on its forehead. If I didn’t crack this fast, those ducks would be shot, shredded and rolled into pancakes before you could say hoi sin sauce.”

Everything’s going rather well for Alex Konninger. He’s drifted his way into a big-money job in a top-tier bank, and if he doesn’t always play by the rules, he’s hardly the only one. Alex doesn’t know it yet, but he’s got a problem, a whole army of problems, in fact, and they’ve all picked this week to jump on him. He’s losing control, his past is about to catch up with him, and he doesn’t know who he can trust, because someone wants him out, and it looks like someone else wants him dead.

In a world of bonds, bodies and blackmail, not everyone will make it to drinks on Friday.

Welcome to Bankers Town, the explosive thriller from Joel Hames. Since its release in 2014, Bankers Town has spent much of its short life in the number one spot in Amazon’s Financial Thrillers category, and attracted near-unanimous praise from its readers.

This was one of the best books I have read in years. I genuinely feel sorry to have finished it. A real page turner – a hugely enjoyable, often funny, always intense thriller of a book, it has a tremendous pace and energy about it and a wonderful and endearing humanity. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

The narrative is extremely punchy and very witty – laugh out loud funny in many places, and the story is entertaining and engrossing. To be honest, I was a bit gutted when it finished!

The story is excellent: a totally believable tale of greed and arrogance, with a superb twist. The writing is fast, clever and witty.

This book has a great plot and gives a fascinating insight into a world we hear so much about but don’t really understand. But most of all it has a unique, engaging voice and a thoroughly entertaining central character. I can’t recommend it enough.

Superb story and one of the best I have read in a long time. Brilliantly written and fast paced, I just didn’t want to put it down.

I loved this book. It has wit and style and the pace and urgency of a thriller, while impressively tackling the underpinnings of the global financial crisis

What an amazing debut from Hames. This author has everything. A gripping plot, great characters and a properly planned out story

Joel Hames keeps us compulsively turning those pages as we chart Alex’s high-stakes progress towards success or ruin. He has given the hero a truly unique voice: Alex Konninger is smart, funny, self-deprecating, so that no matter how hard you might try to dislike him, you can’t.

A fast ride full of twists, fear and dark enjoyment.

Bankers Town is to the credit crisis what Wolf Hall is to the tudor court

A gripping story of one man’s rise and fall, and a fascinating insight into the murky financial world at a time when it provided the biggest stories in world news. But most of all, a page-turner from start to finish. Highly recommended.
